The Small Business Development Center in Gonzales has helped those interested in starting their own business do so with help from students at CSU Monterey Bay. One of those being helped is David and Janet Pacheco, who received help from CSUMB student Arturo Contreras, a senior accounting major.
The Pachecos were able to get a $70,000 loan for the Pacheco Water Store, which opened in June, 2010 in Gonzales, CA. They were also able to get help on accounting practices from Contreras, who has considerable experience. "People need help with accounting and marketing" said Contreras. Contreras' gentle approach helps Hispanic start-up business owners comfortable with discussing complex financial issues. He's able to establish trust and help entrepreneurs organize their bookkeeping and apply for the capital they need to get the businesses going. Contreras is now working at the SBDC as a business advisor.
